The Roseau Cathedral
was badly damaged in 1979 by Hurricane David and repairs and renovations
were made to the roof, but the Church is now desperately in need of
major repairs to the entire structure. Water damage and termites have
taken their toll and threaten the preservation of the rare original
paintings and other irreplaceable historical artifacts. It is estimated
that the restoration of the Cathedral will cost in excess of $2.5
million EC dollars.
On Sunday, 17th August
2003, His Lordship Bishop Malzaire of the See of Roseau launched
the beginning of fundraising activities for preservation of the two
century old Roseau Cathedral. This edifice is not only a historical site
but has also recently become a major tourist attraction.
Activities have been
planned to raise the 2.5 Million EC dollars within a 2 year time span
but this is a gargantuan task and Bishop Malzaire is appealing to the
generosity of Dominicans both at
home and overseas to help save Dominica’s historic Cathedral and a
National Treasure.
